Troll

The Darkspear trolls were pushed out of the jungles of Stranglethorn Vale by warring factions. They found friends in the orcs, followed Thrall to Kalimdor, and hold a place of honour in the Horde.

Place and people

Who the trolls are

“Though they cling to their shadowy heritage, the Darkspear trolls hold a place of honor in the Horde.”

Blizzard, 22 September 2026

Blizzard’s Forever introduction tells how the Darkspear tribe, once at home in Stranglethorn Vale, was driven out by warring factions. They befriended the orcs, and Thrall, the orcs’ young warchief, convinced them to travel with him to Kalimdor.

Blizzard’s race page adds how close the Darkspear came to extinction before that meeting, and how they have prized Kalimdor’s raptors ever since their arrival as companions and mounts.

Blizzard’s 2020 Classic introduction sums up their bargain: ousted from their tropical homelands, the Darkspear pledged their arms and shadowy magics to the Horde.

New in Forever

The troll warlock

Blizzard’s 22 September article lists Troll Warlocks among Forever’s new combinations. For a tribe Blizzard has long described through its shadowy magics, the warlock is a natural next step.

How troll warlocks are introduced in the world is not described in the article, and we have not verified it.

Beginning

Where the story begins

Starting area in Forever

Blizzard has not named a Forever starting area for the trolls in the sources we follow, so we do not name one. The maps below show the homeland in lore, not a confirmed first step.

Home in lore

The Darkspear came to Kalimdor with the orcs. Their older home was the jungle of Stranglethorn Vale.
