Racial traits

What the tauren bring

Place and people

Who the tauren are

“To honor this blood-debt, the tauren joined the Horde, solidifying the two races’ friendship.”

Blizzard, 22 September 2026

Blizzard’s 2020 Classic introduction calls the tauren spiritual and peaceful, a people who cultivate a kinship with the natural world in the name of the Earth Mother.

Blizzard’s race page gives their own name, shu’halo, and tells how the wandering tribes united and settled in their ancestral homeland of Mulgore. Their city, Thunder Bluff, was founded by the chieftain Cairne Bloodhoof on windswept mesas above the plains.

The great horned kodo of the Barrens belong to their story as well: gentle by nature, Blizzard says, but fierce when threatened.

Their story

A debt of honour

Blizzard’s Forever introduction tells how murderous centaur attacked the tauren, who would have been wiped out but for a chance meeting with the orcs. The orcs helped them defeat the invaders.

To honour that blood-debt, the tauren joined the Horde. It is one of the quieter founding stories in the game: a peaceful people keeping a promise to strangers who helped them.

No credited tauren artwork is stored on this site yet, so this chapter uses our own drawing rather than borrowing an unrelated picture.

Beginning

Where the story begins

Starting area in Forever

Blizzard has not named a Forever starting area for the tauren in the sources we follow, so we do not name one. The maps below show the homeland in lore, not a confirmed first step.

Home in lore

Thunder Bluff, above the plains of Mulgore, is the tauren capital in long-standing lore.
