I know this one is a few weeks old, but there seems to be a good deal of misunderstanding so I’m pulling this over to provide some clarifications before closing it.
Often what we see quoted to others is an incomplete list. My guess is either your guildie did not show you all the chat that was listed, or the list they received did not include it. They should be able to review the chat that was reported on their Account Restrictions page, but sometimes the system doesn’t include it.
If they feel an error was made it would be best that they appeal the penalty.
You can be reported for any reason, but that doesn’t necessarily make what is reported violates policy. That chat is reviewed before any action is taken, if it doesn’t violate policy you will likely never know you were reported. If it does, then yes, action may be taken.
The language in the Code of Conduct covers a lot of variables, but that someone is offended by what you said does not mean automatically mean it violates policy. For reported chat to be considered a violation, there needs to be a reasonable and commonly understood basis for concluding that the language used is inappropriate, abusive, or toxic. That is not based solely on an individual’s personal interpretation of an otherwise innocuous word or phrase.
For example, if someone personally disliked the word “strawberry,” they could not reasonably report another player for simply saying “strawberry” and expect enforcement action. The meaning and context of the language must be such that an ordinary person would commonly understand it to be inappropriate, offensive, or directed in a harmful manner.
That isn’t remotely true. The Mature language filter was never used as a excuse to be able to use language that is otherwise considered inappropriate.
The filter serves as a temporary shield, to help parents of minors and others, who do not wish to see such language, to block it. It does not give permission to use profanity and it never has.
Again, you have always been able to report for anything at all. That doesn’t mean anything will come of it. The reported chat is reviewed before any action is taken. Yes, mistakes happen from time to time, we’re not perfect, we make mistakes. That is why the appeal option is there so that we can confirm the initial action and overturn it if necessary.
